Frequently Asked Questions

Why re-invent the wheel? Your experience with Mitchell Graphics is intended to be simple... without frustration and confusion. Put our past experiences and industry expertise to work for you. The following is a list of information we regularly discuss with our customers and prospects. Use them to get you off on the right foot with your project planning. And if you don’t see what you need, just ask. Personalized attention is our specialty.

Why should I use Mitchell Graphics for my print and direct mail campaigns?
There are two reasons our customers come back to us time and time again. The first is our people. We believe that knowing our customers' needs and then working with them hand in hand throughout a project ensures results. In our latest customer survey, 100% of our customers said they would recommend us to a friend. Why? Because we take the time to do it right.

The second reason is our quality. We could bore you to tears with a bunch of technical jargon about all the high tech printing toys we have. But instead, just let it be said that we have top-of-the-line printing abilities to give your printed product the best look possible. Put our printed pieces next to someone else’s… and you will see the difference.

RGB vs. CMYK - What's the difference?
RGB stands for Red, Green, and Blue. Digital images composed of these three colors are what you see on your computer screen. CMYK stands for Cyan, Magenta, Yellow, and Black. These are the ink colors used in the 4-color process offset printing that we do at Mitchell Graphics. Digital images must be converted to CMYK colors before printing.

I can't convert my images to CMYK - now what?
We will convert the images for you. Be aware that in the conversion from RGB to CMYK that colors may change slightly.

How close will the colors in print be to what I see on my screen?
They will be different. Your computer screen represents color by mixing Red, Green, and Blue colors. Printers use Cyan, Magenta, Yellow, and Black inks to create color. Also - due to individual system and monitor settings, your images may appear slightly different on different monitors.

How should I take pictures with my digital camera?
Be sure you have sufficient light on your subject matter and be sure the colors you see are accurate to the original. Set the brightness control to maximum. Consult the manual that came with the camera to take high resolution pictures meant for printing, NOT for use on web sites. Images should be saved as TIFF or EPS images at 300 dpi resolution at the size the image will appear in the printed piece. Pixel dimensions are NOT the same as resolution. For example a 1200 x 1800 pixel image will print at 4" x 6" at 300 dpi. Images should be converted to CMYK color and reviewed for accuracy before submitting to Mitchell Graphics.

How can I determine the resolution of my digital images?
Open the image in a photo editing program such as Adobe Photoshop or Macromedia Fireworks to check image size and resolution. Images must be a minimum of 300 dpi at 100% of the size, measured in inches, at which the image will be printed.

Can I use images from a web site?
No. Images used on the Internet are too low resolution for printing and will result in an inferior print job. 300 dpi TIFF or EPS images at full size and converted to CMYK color must be supplied.

How do I prepare my layout for bleeds?
Add 1/8" of any background or image beyond the trim edge. For example: If you are printing a 4" x 6" postcard and wish the image to bleed on all four sides you will need to size your image at 4.25" x 6.25". This will allow for 1/8" (.125") bleed on all sides.

How can I be sure my layout meets US Postal Service regulations for mailing?
Call your Account Manager to discuss your layout or review the Mailing Guidelines here.

How do I submit my digital files?
To ensure your files travel safely across the Internet, please compress your files before transfer with a file compression utility such as WinZip (Windows), PKZip (Windows), DropStuff (Macintosh), or ZipIt (Macintosh). Click here to Upload Files.

How long will it take to upload my files through www.mitchellgraphics.com?
The speed of your upload depends on modem speed, size of files and the quality of your connection to the Internet.

How will I know if the upload is complete?
A progress bar will indicate that your upload is underway. When complete, you will see a message on screen that the file upload was successful. If you do not see this message please try again. Your connection may have been lost.

How will I get my proof?
We have three choices of proofs: by fax, emailed PDF, or a hard copy color proof delivered overnight to you. The hard copy color proof is the only proof type that is calibrated to our presses and is used as reference by our pressmen during printing.

When will I get my proof?
Proof delivery depends on the type and complexity of your project. Your Account Manager will discuss production details when your order is submitted.

I can’t open my PDF proof. What am I doing wrong?
You will need Adobe Acrobat Reader to view your proof. This is a free download. Download the latest version of Acrobat Reader here.

I’m not happy with the colors in my proof. What next?
The PDF proof you receive will show you the approximate colors to expect in the printed piece. Critical color matching to specific colors in your supplied image dictates the use of a hard copy color proof. Be sure to specify this type of proof should you require this level of color reproduction.

When will I get my order?
Mitchell Graphics ships via UPS, FedEx and U.S. Mail. Please discuss your requirements with your Account Manager.

Where is Petoskey, Michigan?
Petoskey is located along the northwest shore of Lake Michigan near the northern tip of Michigan’s lower peninsula. Stop by if you’re in the area. We’d be happy to give you a facility tour.

How can I get the best results from my mailing?
Keep in mind the 40/40/20 Rule. 40% List, 40% Offer, 20% Creative. List - Do all you can to be sure the people who get your mailer are good candidates to buy your product or service. This includes getting the right mailing list and examining and updating addresses to ensure delivery. Offer – What you are selling must be relevant and attractive (irresistible if possible) to the recipient of the mailer. Creative - What you are selling must be presented in an easy to understand, attractive and compelling manner. Be sure to include a call to action in your copy. Your Mitchell Graphics Account Manager will review your objectives, assist in designing your mail piece and examine your mailing list to help maximize your results.

What is Personalization?
Personalization, also known as Variable Data Printing or Customization, is a method of printing portions of the direct mail offer in such a way that it is unique to each recipient. By speaking directly to each recipient by name and addressing their specific needs you can increase the response to your mailer.

What’s the difference between First Class and Standard A mail delivery?
First Class mail is treated differently than Standard A mail (the old Bulk Rate mail). First Class is usually delivered in 3-5 business days and will be returned to you at no charge if undeliverable. Standard A mail can take up to 2-3 weeks to reach the recipient and will be discarded with no notification if undeliverable.

Can I get notification of a bad address on Standard A mail?
Yes. The USPS has a number of what are called Ancillary Service Endorsements that can be printed on your mail piece to determine how undeliverable mail is treated. Contact your Account Manager to discuss your needs.

What are the different Postcard Postage Rates?
Postcards up to 4.25” x 6” get a 23 cent stamp. Around 19.4 cents if processed as a First Class Automated mailing here at Mitchell Graphics. Postcards larger than 4.25” x 6” all the way up to 6” x 11” in size can be mailed either First Class or Standard A. First Class Automated postage is around 31 cents each. Standard A Automated mails at around 22 cents each. Non-profit institutions mail at around 15 cents per piece. Exact postage is determined after we process your mailing list. Postage is usually paid by check made payable to US Postmaster and is delivered to the Post Office with your mailing.

What is CASS?
The Coding Accuracy Support System examines each address in your mailing list for proper formatting to standardize spelling, abbreviations, addresses and adds +4 Zip to improve the accuracy of your mailing. All Mitchell Graphics mailings are CASS certified. We are able to supply you with the “non-CASS” addresses so you can update your mailing list.

What is NCOALink®?
The National Change Of Address service is required every 90 days for First Class mail. NCOA matches addresses in your list with change of address notifications in the USPS database. This ensures your mail is sent to the most recent address on file for the recipient. We can email the “move updates” to you so you can update your database.

What’s the difference between Presorted & Automated?
Presorting is defined as preparing your mailing so that it is sorted to the finest extent required for the type of mailing whether First Class, Standard A or Non-Profit. In Automating your mailing we apply a barcode in the address area to assist in processing at the Post Office. Discounts off regular postage rates are applied to Presorted and Automated mailings. Mitchell Graphics' Mailing Department will do all it can to maximize any postage discounts your mailing may qualify for.

What’s the best way to “clean” my mailing list?
Mitchell Graphics CASS certifies and removes duplicates in all the lists we work with. We can also perform NCOA updates and complicated merge/purge or list suppression processing that you require.

I rented a list of prospects to mail to and want to make sure none of my current customers are included. Can you help?
Yes. We can compare your customer database to the rented list and remove any duplicates. This is called running a suppression file against your mailing list.

Can I rent a mailing list through Mitchell Graphics?
Yes. We work with a number of list providers and can assist you in obtaining mailing lists. It is important that you have a clear picture of who you wish to mail to. Your Account Manager can assist you in developing a strategy to identify your best prospects.

What are the US Postal Service requirements for my mailing panel layout?
The area where the address will be printed must be White or 10% screened background. Click here to view Postal Clear Zones.
