Image Resolution

Correct image resolution reduces the risk of poor image quality after your project goes off to press. Images should have a resolution of at least 300 dpi at the actual size (100%) the image will appear in the document. Do not resize images after placing into your document.

Images:

Images are defined as continuous tone photos or graphics. Images are typically saved in either grayscale or CMYK color modes. Images can be saved in the following format: .tif, .jpg, .eps, .pdf, .bmp, or .psd. Images should be at least 300 dpi at the size of output.

Line-art:

Line-art is defined as a monotone graphic. Line-art must be in the bitmap color mode. Save line-art in the .tif format. Text and line-art should be at least 1200 dpi at the size of output. Do not resize scanned text or line-art after placing into your document.

Digital Cameras:

Be sure you have sufficient light on your subject matter and be sure the colors you see are accurate to the original. Set the brightness control to maximum. Consult the manual that came with the camera to take high resolution pictures meant for printing, NOT for use on web sites. Images should be saved as TIFF or EPS images at 300 dpi resolution at the size the image will appear in the printed piece. Pixel dimensions are NOT the same as resolution. For example a 1200 x 1800 pixel image will print at 4" x 6" at 300 dpi. Images should be converted to CMYK color and reviewed for accuracy before submitting to Mitchell Graphics.

Internet Images:

Images taken from the Internet will have a resolution too low for printing and will result in an inferior print job. It is highly suggested to avoid the use of images taken from the Internet in your print project.

Remember:

Always supply a copy of all the images and graphics you have used in your file. Do not rename these files after you have placed them in your document.
